36 Hour Guide to Marseille, France

I visited Marseille, France for one reason and one reason only and that was to eat a restaurant I recently saw on Munchies called Livingston.  Little did I know, I was going to enjoy not just the restaurant but, all the restaurants I was able to dine at during the 36 hours I was in Marseille.  With Marseille being the second largest city in France, it is appropriate to plan accordingly.  Here is my day to day walking itinerary for my food guide to Marseille.  Included are some extras if you a) have transportation or b) more time to explore the city.

Les Chambres de la Releve

Evening 1

I landed in Marseille at 4:40PM and after waiting to collect my luggage and sitting in traffic for well over 2 hours, that only gave me a microsecond to freshen up once checked in at Les Chambres de la Releve and head to my reservation at Mijoba.

Mijoba

The dinner menu at Mijoba is prefixed and curated by a selection of organic and sustainable ingredients found within the region of Marseille.  The attention to detail was great and the service was impeccable. Dinner requires patience as it is about two hours long.   Mijoba does offer an A la carte lunch menu if you are unwilling to wait and want to try the offerings.

Day 1

Marseille is a large city but, that does not mean you can not navigate it on foot.  I actually preferred this method since the streets are small, making traffic impossible!  First things first, coffee at La Brulerie Moka.  An intimate cafe serving outstanding coffee.  Do yourself a favor and sit in tranquility for a while before heading to your next destination.

Cecil Food Club, located in the Malmousque neighborhood of Marseille where heavy winds and beautiful ocean views await you. Here, you can grab some items for take away if your journey includes a nice day at the plages scattered throughout Marseille or, to dine in.  On my way back to my room, I discovered the boulangerie Miches et Baguette and had to stop by because, when in France.

Ippon

After quick reset break, I headed to the Vieux Port neighborhood of Marseille to cool down with an iced latte at Chez Moe. Lunch was had at Ippon and it was light and incredibly satisfying. After, it was back to the room to refreshen before having a pre-dinner drink at Tanin Natural Wine Club before walking past buildings decorated with street art to my number one reason for Marseille…Livingston! With all the walking throughout the day and the plates being light, I was ready for this dinner! Another curated dinner with a pre-fixed menu. At best, I did not know exactly what I was indulging in but, I knew that everything was incredible and the wine pairings were perfection!

If in the South of France region of Provence-Alpes Cote d’Azur, Marseille should be included. And if time permits, do visit Bikini at Tuba Clubs as well as a visit to the Parc National des Calanques.
