Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

My trip to Lake Atitlan was originally intended to be three days.  Three days would have allowed me ample time to visit the different towns surrounding the lake while being still.  But, I suddenly had a change of mind while booking and reduced my trip to one day and, I had zero regrets on that decision!

While public transit in the forms of lanchas and shuttles are available while staying in Lake Atitlan, I opted for a private driver for both the roads and the water for ease and to ensure that I was allowing myself the time to explore for the short period I would be staying.  I partnered with my hotel in Antigua as well as Lake Atitlan to provide me with a driver.  Yes, the rates were high but again, I was prioritizing a short stay.  My driver arrived before my pick up time and explained what the journey would entail.  The roads, while extremely windy, were very scenic.  I took in the views of the many volcanoes that inhabit Guatemala.  Viewing all the vegetation that surrounded the roads.  Watching motorists and pick up trucks with passengers comfortably enjoying the ride in the exposed trunk. Thinking to myself, what an easy way of life in comparison to the one I live.  Upon arrival to Panajachel, my lancha driver picked me up at one of the main hubs in Tyzanu and with my luggage securely loaded, we were off.  The ride was bumpy but, the views took away the worries as I watched the beautiful lake front homes zoom past.

I checked in at Anzan Atitlan, also known as Casa Rosada. In a town where hostels dominate the area, it was nice to find a hotel that was suitable to my needs.  Chic, comfortable and extremely quiet besides the sounds of the lakes water crashing against the shore and birds outside my window.  I prepared myself to embrace Mother Nature in its natural habit but not before checking out the town of San Marcos which is a comfortable boat ride from Anzan.

On the dock, I flagged down a boat and squeezed in with the many passengers on their way to surrounding towns.  San Marcos was small and limited in offerings as most of the restaurants recommended were closed.  I grabbed what I could find, having not eaten before I left Antigua, and shortly after headed back to my hotel. , I continuously yearn for quiet moments and Anzan offered just that.  No t.v’s and WiFi is cut off at 10PM. For me, it was very little music but, no Netflix, no Instagram just my notes and a book I’ve been anticipating to read.  I continued to be still until the following day where I woke up early to experience the sunrise. The sunrise owed me nothing as it was both beautiful to view and ever so calming. Up next was a magnificent breakfast on the beach! I was a bit taken aback by all the plates that were set on my table and surprised that I devoured pretty much everything! After breakfast, I enjoyed a brief moment back in my room before it was time for me to head out. Yes, this was a very short trip. And yes, I absolutely enjoyed each moment of my stay.
